A winter storm travels from the Plains to the Midwest with heavy snow and bitter cold. At least 19 people are reported dead across Illinois Wisconsin Ohio and Michigan as travel becomes nearly impossible in affected areas.
Thousands of farmers from Prospect Valley to Michigan gathered at capitols from Denver to Lansing to press for break even prices. Tractors ringed statehouses, speakers urged action, and governors mingled as rallies stretched across the nation ahead of a planned farm strike.
AC Transit proposed that striking drivers resume work at 8.29 per hour with retroactive COLA if accepted by noon. The offer, from chief negotiator Robert Shamoon, aims to restore service while talks with Amalgamated Transit Union Local 192 continue. The union seeks a better pension plan and has 1,850 workers on strike since November 2.
A severe blaze swept the Wenonah Park building in downtown Bay City killing at least two residents and leaving one missing. Sixty others were injured as residents leaped from windows in zero degree weather and flames fed by a crowded 70 year old structure. Authorities planned rescue attempts at first light as state police arrived to assist and hospitals activated disaster plans.
A year long study found the Army can triple the number of women in support units without hurting effectiveness. Project Max Wace tested women up to 35 percent of total strength across medical, maintenance, signal, transportation and police units in company size teams.
President Carter says the United States will not be pushed around in strategic arms negotiations and aims to maintain at least parity or superiority in nuclear deterrents. He also cites progress on talks with the Soviet Union and notes inflation may rise again though unemployment has fallen. Carter praises Sadat's peace efforts and indicates no plan for a personal Mideast mission.
Public Weather director Roger Torsison says rain will be trivial in South County this afternoon and tonight with a 30 to 40 percent chance this evening and tomorrow. A Gulf of Alaska storm moving into the region drives the light showers, though overnight cooling and low moisture will limit amounts.
