Waterfront crime group hearings reveal alleged graft and collusion
The New York waterfront was described as tolerant of criminals who were paid for peace by the maritime industry. Witnesses including Leland S. Andrews and James Sinclair testified that city leaders and longshore union influence shielded crime at piers, with former Mayor Hague and John V. Kenny linked to propping up strikes and corrupt practice as shipowners blamed local authorities for failure to enforce order.

Rescue Team Pushes Toward Lost Plane
SAN BERNARDINO A 10 man rescue party pushed up the snow covered slope of Mt San Gorgonio toward the wreckage of a C 47 transport believed to carry 13 men to their deaths a week ago. The team left two men at its last camp near a skiers cave known as Poopaut. They hope to reach the crest and work down to the crash site. The Air Force chose the back route after difficulty using the shorter path. No signs of life have been sighted.
