New Iris Breeding Couple in Southern Alameda County
A Cherryland couple, Mr and Mrs Walter Luikhn, devoted six years to cultivating 250 iris plants and hybridizing for red or black bearded iris. They maintain the region’s largest Aril-bred iris collection, raise 20 to 25 Aril species in pots and about 100 outdoors, and have one registered iris with the American Iris Society. Mrs Luikhn describes the care and selection process, noting only about 15 of 2600 seedlings are saved for further breeding. The Luikhns host and judge iris trials, plan to attend the 1957 Spring Regional Conclave, and contribute hybrids to the Bay Area breeding scene.
