Hayward officer W. Christensen leads burglary suspect Jimmy Devours, 31, from the roof of the Tenny gon Shopping Center after intruders broke into Clayworth Drugs through a roof hole. A second suspect fled. Devours was arrested on burglary charges. Police found twelve silver dollars and $6 in currency on him.
New York stock market dropped sharply after the Federal Reserve Board raised the discount rate, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbling 17.60 points in the first hour and later narrowing to a 10.26 point loss at noon. The day saw record-high first hour volume and ticker delays on the NYSE as trading surged.
The first hour saw 4.94 million shares changed, the highest since hourly figures began May 19, 1933, with prices falling up to $3 per share. Brokers noted initial weakness but anticipated a rebound as the board said higher rates aim to curb inflation and reduce the balance of payments deficit.
Gemini 7 astronauts Franke Bormer and James Lovell Jr were reported in excellent shape and slept on a second night in space. Controllers said the craft operated nearly perfectly as Gemini 6 prepared for a Monday launch to fly in formation, potentially moved to Sunday. The mission marked Gemini 7's first formation with the expended Titan 2 second stage, launching into orbit Saturday.
PARIS UPS President Charles de Gaulle faced a surprise setback as early returns showed him with about 44.6 percent of the vote, trailing Francois Mitterrand who led the left and Jean Lecanuet in a three-way pack. Mitterrand’s strong showing reflected broad left support.
In a ferocious clash 40 miles northwest of Saigon U S infantry faced repeated Communist assaults aided by Air Force and Navy jets. Casualties were heavy for U S and moderate per Saigon officials with Viet Cong losses estimated up to 200. the fight marked the heaviest action for the U S 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam. Meanwhile a Marine amphibious assault 260 miles northeast of Saigon killed 14 Viet Cong as 7th Fleet ships supported the effort. further fighting left multiple casualties on both sides and a government relief column endured a moderate strike.

Union City Mayor Trving Williams urged a no vote in the New Haven Unified School District election to annex to the South County Junior College District and share its debt. Fellow council members criticized him for making the statement, arguing it was a political move. Williams wants Union City included in Fremont Newark’s junior college district and questions why taxpayers should double their rate for a gain he says may already exist.

Berkeley AP reports the UC seismograph logged a quake about 1 500 miles southeast at 4 58 a m today. The event would place the tremor off the west coast of Mexico. It registered roughly between 6 and 7 on the Richter scale, while the 0% San Francisco quake stood at 8 25 on the Richter scale.
Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered 144 more bases closed or reduced, aiming to save 410 million dollars yearly. Combined with 703 prior actions since March 1961, total yearly savings would reach 1.4 billion.
