Of 7,233,077 voters, about 182,000 skipped the Lyndon Johnson versus Barry Goldwater race and 192,600 did not choose between Murphy and Salinger for the Senate. Propositions 2, 3, 11, 12, 14, 15 drew large abstention. Prop 1 passed. Prop 2, 3, 12, 14 faced notable indifference. Overall, the indolence highlighted the electorate’s independent streak.
