Witnesses were summoned as McCarthy warned against invoking the Fifth Amendment. The move follows earlier charges that hundreds of subversives worked in defense plants.

Castro Valley Lions Club will honor seven past presidents at the weekly dinner meeting tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the former clubhouse now owned by Hayward Moose Lodge on Rutledge Avenue. Program Chairman Oscar Stark announced honorees Howell Plemmons A J Gonselves Dr. Monroe Whetstone Paul Tickner Hank Hampton Jack Pankey and Tom Heaton, each bringing a guest. President Ted Lawrence will preside.
Twenty five new members will be initiated into the second degree of the Father Walter O'Brien council Knights of Columbus. Meeting at 8 p.m. tonight in the hall on Elgin Street Lorenzo. Refreshments will be served after the semi monthly session, said Grand Knight Al Dunler.
A 24 year old Berkeley man Danié) Matias of 212 Fifth street was killed early yesterday when his southbound car left the Hayward Niles road near the Hayward golf course and struck a culvert. He died at Fairmont hospital after being pronounced dead on arrival. Matias worked as a laborer for a saw manufacturing firm and is survived by his parents and siblings. Funeral services will be held Wednesday in Berkeley. Two other people were seriously injured in separate Hayward accidents Friday night and Saturday. Elmer Murray, 53, suffered a fractured hip and facial lacerations when struck while attempting to cross Castro and C streets. He was treated at Fairmont hospital and transferred to Eden hospital in good condition. The driver Harold Markowitz, 20, parks Air Force Base, left turn onto C street as Murray stepped off the curb. Markowitz and his passenger Kenneth Nelson, 20, were not hurt and were not cited pending further investigation.
Cherryland may set a bond issue figure tonight as the Cherryland County Water District awaits Hayward's revised offer for selling the Cherryland water system. Everett Silver says if Hayward declines, the district may restart with a new water system. The district previously eyed 490 000 dollars but faced legal action over meeting notices.

An unidentified elderly man was struck and killed at Seventh and Castro streets in Oakland by a speeding hit-run driver, who fled the scene. The car was found abandoned four blocks away as police search the neighborhood for the driver.
