Power use cuts proposed to curb energy waste

Price of gas may hit 60 cents

Washington reports indicate Congress may be asked to authorize a gasoline tax hike to raise prices toward 60 cents a gallon. President Nixon expected to announce a new Federal Energy Administration led by William E. Simon, with Senate action on year round daylight saving time to conserve fuel. Simon, still Treasury secretary, backs tax to curb consumption as energy emergency plans churn. John A. Love resigned as head of the Energy Emergency Action Group amid turmoil, with deputy Charles NiBona also leaving. Love told the Denver Post the effort has lacked progress and access to the President.

San Leandro rider wins Cyclexpo 74 best custom motorbikes

Robert Cecchini of San Leandro, 33, earned top awards at Cyclexpo 74 in Los Angeles for his American Express customized Honda. He won 1000 for advanced design, 100 for best-engineered frame, and 1000 grand prize among 400 entries, following prior acclaim as America's most beautiful chopper for 1972. Cecchini began building motorcycles five years ago and is an electrical engineer.

Giant Newark Baby Tests Kaiser Records in Hayward

Earnest Ray Foster Jr., born Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Kaiser Hospital in Hayward, weighed 14 pounds 1 ounce and measured 23 to 24 inches, surpassing the previous Kaiser record of 13 pounds 7 ounces. His parents, Kathleen and Earnest Foster Sr. of Newark, say the baby’s arrival was shocking yet joyous, with the infant still in the hospital’s intensive care unit after a Caesarean delivery.

Pioneer zips past Jupiter on 1960s space voyage

Pioneer 1, a 900 pound unmanned craft from Ames NASA, completed a historic rendezvous with Jupiter after a 21 month, 620 million mile journey. It reached 81,000 miles above the planet then veered away, dodging the deadly radiation belt as it sent back data on solar system formation.
