Energy crunch snarls jobs as fuel cuts bite West Coast
Amid fuel cutbacks and diesel shortages, workers fear rising unemployment. San Leandro truckers queue for scarce diesel while local councils push energy policy actions. Plans unfold for a 40 percent council pay raise, a new San Leandro human resources post, and a Civic Center project in Fremont. Balaguer Nominated for Dominican Presidency in May Election
President Joaquin Balaguer was officially nominated by his Reformist Party for the May 1974 presidential race in the Dominican Republic. He was not present at the nomination. No opposition candidates have been named and the constitution imposes no term limit on his presidency. Balaguer previously led the country after a 1956 election with U.S. Marines once involved in the region. A separate incident reports a 21 year old man killed in a wreck near a hill, with deputies and highway patrol arriving at the scene. The victim, William B. Gray of Austin, Texas, survived initially and was hospitalized in serious condition. A Vermont governor swapped a large limousine for a smaller car to save gas, loaned from the Department of Safety, to be used for visiting dignitaries.
