Senate action would expand Interstate Commerce Commission power to keep passenger trains running temporarily. Senator Warren Magnuson said the bill closes a loophole that allowed the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway to halt train operations recently.
Washington AP reports Rufus W. Youngblood, once credited with shielding President Johnson during Kennedy’s assassination, is promoted to deputy director, becoming the Secret Service’s No. 2 official in a service overhaul announced by Director James J. Rowley.
San Diego Gov Ronald Reagan at a regents meeting urged legislation to let campus chancellors expel students for provocative acts. He cited incidents on UC campuses including San Diego where students flew a North Vietnamese flag and Berkeley where a flag issue sparked debate. Regent Gabraith said no action was taken as no statute or regulation was violated.
In San Jose AP reports Judge Joseph F. Kelley sentenced Raoul R. Vasquez to life in prison for the robbery and murder of liquor store owner Frank Heimgartner on July 10.
ORMOND BEACH Fla AP from a photo authorities identified James Stephen Moore of San Anselmo California as the second victim of a double teenage slaying. The body of Daniel Schnaltz of Solsberry Indiana was identified earlier. Both youths were shot to death off a busy U.S. road near here Wednesday. Moore’s brother and sister in San Francisco confirmed the identification. They said he left home about two months ago to work on a charter sailboat operating out of the Virgin Islands.
A water main break at East 70th Street and Hough Avenue caused gas service outages for about 5 000 residents in Cleveland. Crews pumped lines clean, then lit appliances individually to prevent gas leaks while 350 workers from five Ohio cities worked to restore service before nightfall. Red Cross opened Edison and Addison Junior Highs as shelter and food centers. over 100 people spent the night there. Mayor Stokes returned from Washington as police expanded presence and used a command bus to issue emergency warnings and aid. The cold 29 degree day left many in heated shelters and sparked caution over looting fears in the area.
Five people died instantly in a head on crash on State Highway 12 near Rio Vista three miles south of Rio Vista in dense fog. Victims included Rev William Seay 44 his wife Helen and son Tony 15 from Stockton area and cousins Michael Leon Camp 18 Ronald Camp 18 from Rio Vista. A third vehicle pickup struck the wreckage and five riding in the pickup were hospitalized in Lodi.
Funeral services are planned Monday for Char atte N. Lutheld 48 of 6250 Robertson Ave Newark who died Friday in a local hospital. She was Montana born and had lived in the area about 10 years. She is survived by Arnold Lathard her husband and by Christine Winters of Fremont and Deborah and Dana Winters of Fremont. She was sister of Maxine Capatilli of Portola Valley. Services at 2 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park officiated by Rev Loren Ridings of Centerville Presbyterian Church. Burial under Chapel of the Palms Mortuary. Oak Lodge No 61 F and AM and Musicians Union No 47 APM are listed as affiliated groups.
Funeral services Monday for John T. Forth lifelong Hayward area resident who died Thursday in Palo Alto Hospital at 51. He was an executive with Foremost McKesson, worked 34 years, and is survived by his wife Laura, son John T. Forth Jr., four children, a sister and a brother, with six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He lived at 17150 Willson Avenue Newark and was a native of Hayward.
A Burglary defendant, Gene Allan Taylor, 23, was sentenced to prison after county assessors corrected a $28.8 million tax rate error that inflated property values. Hayward resident and former Hunt Foods foreman faces a 30 percent increase in assessed value miscalculation, with judge ordering prison after probation revoked.
A Latin group in Sacramento says the district attorney’s investigation failed and vows action after reopening a local shooting case. The new organization Las finos Unidos Para La Justicy Latins United for Justice has dismissed attorney Jase Ramos of Moore and Rants, Oakland, and will seek new legal representation for witnesses and victims.
