Cal State dean predicts 1978 economy will grow

Jay L. Tankz dean of the school of business at California State University Hayward says 1978 will bring steady economic growth with little chance of a recession. He notes a continued recovery from the 1974 75 downturn, though growth will be slower than in the past two years and warns against inflationary pressure and limited resources.

Public strike ban drive falls short in California

Sponsors of a proposed constitutional amendment to outlaw strikes by public employees disclosed they failed to reach the required signatures for June ballot. The Committee for Citizens Rights estimated about 487 thousand valid signatures, short of the 429,645 needed, with Friday deadline looming to county clerks. The plan linked to Mayor Pete Wilson’s gubernatorial bid. California State Employees Association called the setback a relief for smooth labor relations.

Convent rape suspect shot by police near San Jose campus

A 27 year old Francisco Loera of San Jose was shot in the leg by a police detail after attempting to fire on officers staking out St Patrick's Convent near San Jose State University. The convent comes amid a series of rapes and assaults in the campus area this year. Other suspects have been captured recently near the campus by plainclothes officers.

Eden Hospital names first male nursing supervisor

Ricke Whaley becomes Eden Hospital's nursing supervisor, the first male in the role, drawing on Navy corpsman experience in Vietnam and the Philippines. He oversees staffing, patient care coordination, and daily ICU and ward visits, while managing stereotypes and embracing a changing hospital environment. Whaley, born in Oakland and raised in San Lorenzo, lives in Livermore with his wife and two adopted children.
