A shotgun blast through a talk hole at Ingleside Station killed Sgt. John Young, 46, and wounded dispatcher Ellen Lipney, 30, as two men attacked the lobby. Police hunted a Black man about 5'9 wearing a white T shirt, with at least two suspects believed involved.
In Saigon president Nguyen Van Thieu appears to retain control of the National Assembly after nationwide elections. Unofficial results show 58 pro government seats and 32 opposition with 140 of 159 decided. 34 incumbents won four year terms while 106 are new deputies.
Report from Hayward where a weekend marathon features Bugs Bunny cartoons and the film 2001 A Space Odyssey. Props include 1,270 pole mounted loudspeakers stuffed with sleeping bags as cars are barred from the grounds.
The National Committee Against Discrimination in Housing urges San Leandro to extend its school boundaries north of Durant Avenue to include more minority students. The group calls for recruitment of minority teachers, exchange programs with Oakland, ethnic history courses, housing assistance, and a feasibility study to move the district across Durant Street as part of an affirmative action plan addressing de facto segregation.
Two men armed with handguns robbed the 14501 East 14th Street club yesterday about 4:40 pm. They took $264 from a till while a second robber tried to escort Mrs. Bernadette Richcreek, 48, to the restroom and she fainted. Patron Mark Brown, 63, assisted Richcreek as the men checked the restroom.
Dr. Paul W. McCracken, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, says a follow up program will be needed to stabilize wages and prices after the 90 day controls expire. He warns a freeze alone cannot ensure long term stability and could fuel future inflation.
