Former White House aide H R Haldeman and two advance men are included with the Secret Service and Charlotte police in a $820 suit filed by youths who say they were illegally ejected from a Nixon visit. Washington reports the season’s first teachers strike has occurred as NEA officials say 143 other “serious trouble spots” could spark action. NEA cautions that actual strikes may be far fewer, predicting more agreements go to third party fact finding and arbitration than in past years. In 1972 there were 15 strikes by NEA and AFT units.

Government proposes one year pause on cleaner fuel conversions
The United States government plans a one year suspension of converting to cleaner fuels to save heating oil. Public hearings are set for September 6 and 7 with a decision after. The rule would halt converting plants from heating oil or sulfur oil to low sulfur and could be waived to protect health or meet air quality standards. Local Sierra Club leader Lawrence Mass supports flexibility but warns EPA policies could undermine air quality in the long run.
