In Clovis Calif six children of Ben and Betty Yunkit perished as a new home burned. A teenage neighbor smashed a window and handed four children to others outside but they were dead at the time. Fire Chief W B Riley questioned window smashing as possibly worsening the draft. The victims Dennis nine Howard eight Charlotte seven Shirley six John three and Deborah two months died of suffocation. Authorities said the cause was not yet clear and would take days to determine.
A husband chased a car carrying his wife Mia Cordova 21 and relatives when the vehicle sped away on Highway 29. It crashed into a tree, leaving four dead at the scene and another succumbing later at a hospital. Injured survivors included Cordova and two youths from Napa. The group had just attended a Napa Valley winery reunion.
