Declining enrollments hit Downey schools in California
Downey district faces closing Edith Unsworth Elementary amid a statewide drop in public school enrollment. Officials note a 20 percent five year decline locally and anticipate further cuts as birth rates and attitudes shift. Experts project statewide enrollment below four million by 1986. Community groups sue and threaten recalls over closures.
