Two local men arrested after high speed chases in San Leandro
San Leandro police and sheriff's deputies pursued two local men over the weekend for reckless driving and resisting arrest. Anne James Varstad, 22, led a six minute residential cross pattern chase reaching 70 mph, scraping a sheriff's vehicle, before stopping at East 150th Street. Francis Vandemark Murry, 24, fled a five minute chase along Marina Boulevard and Nimux Freeway ramps reaching 80 mph, then along Deake Street where officers say he attempted to kick and strike them before arrest.

A 14-year-old Hayward youth was seriously injured when his scooter overturned on Highway & west of Patomares Road during a narrow U turn. Gary V. Smith of 2770 Ocala St. traveling eastbound apparently lost control and the scooter hit the pavement. Smith suffered a broken leg and was treated and released at Kaiser Hospital in Hayward.

Hayward Enrollment Plan On Tonight By School Board
Hayward Unified School District Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. at the district office to act on an enrollment plan supplementing the interim policy for Fairview School. The plan would allow volunteers from outside the Fairview area to enroll, with likely limited participation. Four Arrested On Drug Charges In Hayward Park
Hayward police arrested four persons on drug charges at Mast Avenue Park following a tip. Officer Leo Alvelais reported the driver, Larry Dunne Davis, 18, of Lilly Avenue, tossed a container containing red capsules and later a tin with white pills and tabs, along with marijuana cigarettes. Davis faced marijuana and dangerous drugs charges. three others including a 15-year-old San Leandro boy and Hayward girl, plus a 19-year-old Fremont resident, were charged with possession of dangerous drugs and being in a location serving marijuana. All suspects were handed to Alameda County Sheriff’s Department.

Hayward police responding to a burglary at 1700 Street last night arrested Ronald James Hall, a 20 year old Oakland man wanted on a $20,000 warrant for an earlier escape from Santa Clara County Jail. He was found hiding in a bedroom closet. The home was listed as previously leased to Patricia Hall, who identified herself as the suspect’s sister and returned with her four children to find the locks changed. The burglary report came from the landlord.

Sparks showered nearby areas as firefighters from Pleasanton, Valley Cities, Alameda County, Livermore, San Ramon and the state fought the blaze. One 16 year old injured, taken to Valley Memorial Hospital, released after treatment.
