Law not blamed for divorce surge in California
SACRAMENTO AP A liberative divorce law isn a scapegoat for rising California divorces say state researchers The 1969 measure lets marriages dissolve on irreconcilable differences and shortened the filing to decree time A news release citing a Department of Health paper says the surge in 1970 71 was driven by more couples staying in state and shorter dissolution times not by the law The study notes 21 000 divorces or annulments occurred in 1970 71 vs about 45 000 expected without a law change Dr Robert Shoon a health department researcher says the factors combined explain the rise with no basis to claim the statute caused more divorces The analysis also notes a concentration of divorces among women aged 25 to 41 and among those married earlier.
