Democrats Attack Nixon On Health Bill Veto
Democrats pledged to make Nixon health education and welfare veto a 1969 election issue. The $40.5 billion package exceeded his budget request by 4.7 billion, and he vetoed it Wednesday at Camp David. House override attempts fell short 203 to 171. Speaker Albert and Sen Magnuson condemned the veto, noting the need to fund training doctors and aid for emotionally disturbed children. Nixon defended the veto citing out of balance federal spending and promised to consider signing more than his initial 28.7 billion proposal.

McGovern favors a larger reduction arguing rapid redeployment and NATO cohesion can handle it, while U S military leaders warn against sizable pullbacks.
