North Vietnam Launches Heavy DMZ Offensive Attacks
UPI reports intensified fighting near the DMZ with North Vietnamese gunners firing nine hundred rounds of heavy artillery and ground assaults against Marine bases near Fire Support Base Alpha and other DMZ positions. Seven American soldiers were killed when a Huey helicopter was shot down south of the DMZ during a reconnaissance mission. Col. Le Va Hien says 28 Communists were killed while government troops sustained several wounded as an expected general offensive grows. The North Vietnamese offensive reportedly involves about four regiments and is aimed at coordinating shelling with ground assaults across a wide front.
