LOS ANGELES AP Two psychiatrists say riots tearing through Los Angeles' Negro districts will likely spread to other ghetto islands in the area before they end. They cite anger mixed with mistrust of whites as a probable cause, along with Negro self-hatred and anxiety about the future. Dr Edward J Stainbrook of USC Medical School urged forceful action until emotions cool.
Battalions of Nabtonel Guard's 49th Division were airlifted today from the San Joaquin Valley to help suppress rioting. The two units, from Fresno and Modesto, joined the 40th Armored Division in responding to the unrest amid calls for police reform and public safety measures.
Police Chief William H. Parker said he would have asked President Johnson for federal troops if state authorities had not mobilized the National Guard to quell rioting in the Negro ghetto.
