HOLLYWOOD AP Former silent screen and Broadway star Maedtur Tay lies seriously ill after collapsing unconscious in a bathroom. Ambulance attendants say she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage or thrombosis and was taken to a hospital. doctors say she is serious but not critical and expected to survive. Tay rose to fame as a Follies girl in Baldhead Row and peaked in 1927’s The Merry Widow, later appearing in Dolts of Clay and On With The Dance with a career spanning vaudeville to Hollywood. Born Marie A Keenig May 10, 1889, she married William Schwencker Jr in 1908 and later multiple spouses, leaving a son with her later partner before another divorce.
An influential Negro organization urges a citywide boycott of downtown Oklahoma City stores unless all restaurants are opened to Negro customers. The request, issued by the group, highlights civil rights pressure on local merchants and public dining access.
The Senate approved the Antarctic Treaty by 66 to 21 amid debate over territorial claims and nuclear ban. Supporters called it a new start towards peace and a framework for disarmament, while opponents warned it could forfeit U.S. claims in the region. Britain, France, the USSR, and other powers expressed backing. Chile and Argentina anticipated ratification.

Sacramento AP reports Fred Patton quit as Governor Brown's executive secretary and was replaced by Hale Champion. Patton, 37, had led Brown's 1958 campaign and served twenty months as top aide. Champion, also 37, has been Brown's press secretary since January 1939. Gerald Maher, 42, takes leave to run Kennedy's press operation. Brown plans to name a new press secretary in Southern California. the job pays more than 16 000 dollars annually.
Prince Abdul-Reza Fihlevi, brother of Iran's shah, visits the United States for a third time. He plans to inspect food packing in Santa Clara Valley, visit ranches in the San Joaquin Valley, and hunt in Alaska. The Harvard graduate says hunting clears his mind and praises American methods, particularly in the West.
Glen Cove New York faces a baffling pair of ambush shootings in three months. Oglesby a law abiding American, was struck while working on his car at a service station on May 17. Bullet fragments lodged near his wife and five children during separate attacks at a factory. Police investigate, unsure of motive or suspect.
Merced AP report says Mr and Mrs John Stewart, poverty burdened parents of missing six year old Angie May Stewart, will undergo lie detector tests about her disappearance. Sheriff John Latorraca says the Stewarts are suspects as much as anyone else. The girl vanished near Fort State Park in the Central San Joaquin Valley since Monday. Clarence Ashley, 35, who befriended the Stewart family, underwent polygraph tests but results were inconclusive. He agreed to another battery administered by 6th Army experts and says he knows nothing. Superior Judge R. Re Sischo ordered Latorrata to show cause why Ashley should not be released. Ashley was jailed Monday. Bloodhounds, helicopters, and divers searched Merced and Mariposa counties and the San Joaquin River.
In Rockport Maine Basil a seal trained by Harry Goodrich a tree surgeon and skin diver vanished after leaping from a boat for a swim. A shark estimated at 114 feet long devoured the pet famed as a puppy like seal despite Goodrich spearing it with a harpoon.
In Miami police question the nickname of a teenage burglary ring called The Uncatchables after 29 arrests. Reports from Newport Beach and Menlo Park describe separate incidents including a prankster driving through a home and a truck accident that showered plaster on a sleeping child. In Brisbane California three girls admitted breaking 49 school windows on a dull afternoon.
London AP reports the Soviet Union sent another note to Norway accusing the government of complicity in the fighting in the United States. A B47 reconnaissance plane was shot down by a Soviet fighter on July 1, and Norway has denied the Soviet charge.
Garswood England AP reports brakeman Reg Bills fell onto the track when a slow moving train struck him. He struck matches and tossed tiny flares to signal danger, saving his life as firemen and crew halted the oncoming train and alerted a signal house.
In Hidalgo County a grand jury indicted Roman Catholic priest Rev. John B. Felt, 27, on a charge of assault with intent to rape. District Attorney Lattimore said the charge stems from a March 23 incident at Sacred Heart Church involving Maria America Guerran, 20, a Pan American College student. Authorities have been unable to locate Father Felt.
