New York dispatch notes Henry Wallace acknowledged Communists were in his Progressive party during a NBC roundup. He said they did not support his doctrines and he could not be sure if they still ran the party as he sought denouncement of North Korean pressure but party leaders refused to back him.
Albert C. Ramer and Frank Ornelas, both injured when Ramirez’s car struck them on Heserian boulevard north of Jackson street. Ramirez claimed he did not see them until too late. Ramirez’s car ran out of gas in northbound lanes. he obtained a small refuel from Willis R. Wilson. A collision notice was issued for parking in the roadway.
Unofficial returns from most precincts show Clark leading Taylor by about 1,100 votes for the U S Senate. Clark 26,877 Taylor 25,717 as the unofficial count awaits the official canvass and final results.
In New York trading, stocks ended the week lower with reduced volume. General Motors and Chrysler saw notable activity on arbitrage for tax purposes, while autos declined after opening losses. A fire on Dixon Avenue near Valle Vista destroyed about 2,500 square feet of pens, with Alta Vista Fire Department responding.
The Army recalls 7,802 captains and lieutenants from the unorganized reserve for 21 months of active service. By Sept 22 and Sept 29, 1st and 2nd waves will be called, with 1,042 medical and related reserve officers also to be recalled. Exemptions apply for certain teaching and health roles, while medical, dental, and veterinary reserves nationwide will fill quotas by Sept 10.
A $2 contribution from the Kaswird Haymakers pushes the Sunshine campaign total to $650. Sunrise Parents Club and The Daily Review spearhead the effort to bring sunshine back to Sunrise School. Donations are to be made payable to the Sunrise Parents Club at the Review office, 431 Castro Street.
A telephone cable serving 455 homes in Washington Acres was uprooted by local construction. Kariig Kenechelian, manager of the Hayward Pacific Telephone branch, said crews were dispatched to repair and bury the line after the exposed cable was reported. No outages were reported.
The San Lorenzo Village Disaster Relief committee met at the Fire Station to discuss bomb attack preparations. Instructions include a one minute continuous siren, drapes drawn, indoor stay, minimal evacuation, quick medical aid, and an all clear signal of three thirty second blasts.
The official starter for the derby will be announced, with the event honoring Jack Holland Jr. aged 10 and Ed Brown aged 1% among those listed. Lloyd Dias is also mentioned in connection with the ceremony.

U S and South Korean units fought to hold the airstrip as communists pressed near Pohang. Reds captured Pohang port and moved toward the airfield while UN forces, including tanks and air support, countered along the Naktong river and Chinju transport hub. About 10,000 rebels gathered near Kigye with 3,000 in action, as MacArthur noted counteracting moves downstream.
A 20 by 120 foot chicken house at 1717 Castro Street was endangered by a grass fire at 3 30 pm Thursday on the Joe Osberg property. About 90 000 square feet burned between two houses, $100 damage to fences. Fire Chief Wolters said the blaze could have spread if not halted by a garden hose. Hayward and Fairview departments aided in responding to nearby blazes suspected to be started by youngsters with matches.
Berkeley U P seismographs recorded a small earthquake in the Livermore area last night. Assistant seismologist Don Tochor said the event lasted about nine halves of a minute and began at 8:43 PM PDT. The quake was detected by the University of California seismograph network.
The House voted by voice to cite 14 persons for contempt, part of a two day total of 56. Among the cited are atomic scientists and union officials for refusing to testify to the Un American Acts committee about communist ties. Prosecution goes to the Justice Department with a maximum penalty of $1,000 fine and one year in jail.

London crowds gathered outside Clarence House awaiting a bulletin on the birth of a prince or princess to Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh.
