Eight Die In Sunday Bay Area Traffic Tragedy
Northern California saw at least eight fatalities in traffic incidents yesterday. In San Francisco, seven youths aged 17 to 21 were injured when their 1931 convertible rolled over near Crow Canyon Road. John Zumvyak 20 suffered serious head injuries and was hospitalized. Driver Joseph McCarthy 20 was cited for speeding. Other riders Jose Martinez 18 and Alan Dean 21, Tom Gildren 17, Donald DeBene 18, Richard Rusto 17, and McCarthy are listed as injured but not seriously. In nearby counties three others were hurt in separate crashes along U.S. 50 and Highway 40 with hospital treatments noted.

An early morning blast at Hiser Bakery on 1252 Davis Street in San Leandro caused about 900 in damage. Owner Mel Hiser said he was lighting an oven at 4 44 am when he saw a puff and an explosion, breaking a large front window and scattering baking materials. no injuries were reported. Fire officials said accumulated gas in the oven likely caused the explosion.

Child Drowns In Niles Creek
A seven year old Oakland boy named Patel Moore, missing since yesterday afternoon, was found drowned in seven feet of water along Alsmeda Creek near the Old Niles Canyon road east of Niles. Sheriff deputies and underwater rescue teams recovered the body around 2:15 a.m. The boy wandered off during a family picnic around 2 p.m. Saturday. a search began after 6:30 p.m. and extended overnight. The body was taken to Chapel of the Palms in Centerville for funeral arrangements.

A fire started in a refuse area near 675 Castro Street yesterday about 8:57 am damaged an equipment shed, paper supplies, and canteen gear at the Doggie Diner outdoor restaurant counter and adjacent service station. Cause suspected from a lit cigarette in a trash area. In Castro Valley, 11 sheep were singed but no major damage reported in a grass fire near 21096 Clare Street around 5:27 pm. Fire officials say Hendrickson denied starting the blaze. sheep owned by J. B. Cheathem, 20928 Wilbeam Avenue. A second fire at 4:06 am burned over two acres of land along the East Bay Municipal Utility District watershed near Crest Avenue end Stanton Avenue.
