Birchers Cleared In $2.5 Million Damage Suit

Santa Ana California A Superior Court judge dismissed a $2.5 million damage suit against the John Birch Society and two top national officials. Charges against founder Robert Welch and public relations director John Rousselat were dropped. Remaining suit against State Sen. John Schmitz and Frank LaMagna continues. The plaintiff, attorney Robert Battin, claimed false arrest and conspiracy tied to last November’s elections. Luther McNra Stewart longtime state supervisor of the State Board of Equalization died yesterday at 60. A native of Santa Barbara he lived in the Castro Valley area 49 years. Viet Cong Shells Outposts North of Saigon Battle Report

Viet Cong forces shelled government outposts in the Mekong Delta and in Pleiku areas near Saigon with mortars and rockets. Casualties were reported as light in some attacks, while a Viet Cong medical facility with 14 wards and large quantities of medicine and supplies was uncovered 35 miles southwest of Saigon. Air strikes by U.S. planes in North Vietnam and around Saigon killed dozens of guerrillas, damaged targets, and left several crew injured after a B57 crash near Nha Trang.
