4 Metal Plants Sign With Union
SAN FRANCISCO John Schir avenza secretary of the striking International Association of Machinists said 360 California Metal Trades Association plants have bolted the employer group and signed separate contracts with the union. The new contracts call for wage increases of 20 to 30 cents an hour this year and 15 to 18 cents next year. He said they aim to keep the employer unit intact while pushing for a decent raise. The machinists struck key plants as negotiations stalled in July. Since then all association plants in the Bay Area have locked out machinists, idling 8000 machinists and 4000 other workers. Robert Grunsky managing director of the association said 10 formal negotiations with the union were scheduled.
