Big Sur fires merge to blacken 48000 acres in wildland blaze

Two massive fires combine in the Ventana and surrounding Los Padres area as lightning sparks rage across central California. National Guard aids supply lines and crews while Forest Service imposes camping restrictions and bans open fires outside approved sites. California population forecast for 2000 rises sharply

Bernice Jimenez Dies After Stroke In Hayward

Bernice Jimenez 51 wife of former Hayward Fire Chief Matt Jimenez died at St. Rose Hospital from complications after a massive stroke suffered June 23. A longtime active figure in local groups she organized events, played tennis weekly at CSU Hayward, and served with the San Francisco Ballet Guild East Bay branch, the Hayward Boys Club, and school and community committees. Married 31 years she was described as lively and engaging by friends.

Carter offers plan for illegal aliens in United States

President Carter proposes legal status and temporary five year work permits for millions of undocumented aliens who entered between 1970 and 1977 or before 1970. He argues status would reduce fear and aid data on numbers, location and family size while a future decision on citizenship is deferred. Rockwell Officials Sold Stock Days Before BI Cancellation

Rockwell International chairman Willard F. Rockwell Jr and general counsel John J. Roscia sold about one sixth of their Rockwell stock for 1.4 million dollars ten days before President Carter canceled the BI bomber program. Rockwell said the sales were ethical and filed them with the SEC, while Congress pushed for an investigation.
