Hayward priest Honcharenko shaped Russian life in California
The life of Ukraiian priest Agapins Honcharenko in San Francisco and Hayward, 1869 to 1872, influenced Russian refugees and Dezembrists. He edited The Alaska Herald, opposed Alaska commercial excess, and published Svoboda. He and his wife built a small community on Ukraina Hill, planted a pine tree, and baptized 100 Russian children in a rock cave. He died in 1910 and was buried beside his wife under a pine tree they planted.
