Seven Injured in West of Dumbarton Bridge Head On Crash

A two car collision west of the Dumbarton Bridge Toll Plaza injured seven people, three seriously. Anita Marie Berlin, 61, of San Carlos, spun out of control at about 40 mph, hitting a second car and a third in the opposite lane. Berlin suffered a broken lip and was taken to Washington Hospital. Andres Casiano, 46, of Fremont, sustained fractured ribs, broken teeth, and multiple cuts. Rosario Baranada, 23, Newark, fractured a leg. Both Berlin and Baranada were transported to Washington Hospital, as were four passengers from Casiano car for initial injuries.

Bizarre Assault In Hospital In Fair Adont Hospital

An Oakland man, Robert Charles Porter, 22, was arrested at Fair Adont Hospital in San Leandro on charges of assault with intent to commit rape and resisting arrest after attacking a female patient in a body cast. Porter, visiting Ronald Lee Jones, reportedly attacked the Berkeley secretary while a friend watched. Porter was found with a flask of whiskey. The incident occurred in the hospital visiting area. hospital officials reported no further injuries.

Coroner Orders Death Probe In Fremont Case

The body of Joseph C. Smith age 48 of 1846 Glenmoor Drive Fremont was found in his bedroom by wife Marcia 41. An autopsy is set for today. A vial of tranquilizers and an overturned water glass were found beside the bed. Smith a Sears Roebuck merchandise controller in Southland Shopping Center Hayward was World War II veteran and Bronze Star recipient. He is survived by wife and Fremont residents Mary Marshall Alan Stuart and Steven. Funeral services 11 am tomorrow at Fremont Memorial Chapel Mortuary 4723 Peralta Blvd Fremont. Burial is private.

Hospital Fire Causes $1800 Damage at Levine Hospital

A fire in a hospital room wastebasket at Levine Hospital Maynard caused $1800 damage. The blaze, starting around 4 am, was confined to the room’s floor and wall. Investigators believe a cigarette or ash tray contents emptied into a washbasin sparked the blaze.

Youths Rob and Stab Man in Hayward Park Incident

An 11 year old Hayward youth was arrested at Sorensen Park with others after an assault on Bernard Cothran 33. Cothran reported four youths forced entry to his home, stabbed him in the back and took his wallet. Police say the youth carried a concealed pocket knife and one suspect linked to an earlier armed robbery case. Cothran treated at Fairmont Hospital for multiple cuts and stab wound.

Fremont Home Burglarized Turns Into Family Loss

Burglars broke into Carlos Santoyo home at 41274 Erma Ave over the weekend stealing jewelry money and more than 1300 in items. They unlocked the garage door and pried open the kitchen door using a crowbar or similar tool. The family left about 5 pm Saturday and found the theft Sunday upon return.

Five Arrested On Narco Charges In Mission Boulevard Lot

Officer Leo Alvelais reported five people were arrested after a routine check at the Raven Bar parking lot on Mission Boulevard. A man was seen rolling a marijuana cigarette near a tamper van and a search found marijuana and dangerous drugs. Suspects named were Ralph Lewis 26 San Francisco Perry Saunders 26 Pinole Lynda Saunders 21 Robert William Cain 25 and Atlee Arthur Jupp 25 all from Lagnitas.

Motorbike Crash Injures Hayward Men Near Fairview

Two Hayward men were injured when their motorbike overturned while turning off Fairview Avenue, one half mile east of Hansen Road. Thomas Hadley, 24, of 25688 Lander Ave, and Monte Basley, 25, of 25961 West View Way, are in satisfactory condition at Eden Hospital. Hadley has a fractured ring and multiple cuts and bruises, Basley a broken leg.

A Hayward youth, 15 year old John Shook of 24031 Pars Street, remained in critical condition at St Francis Hospital San Francisco after a gas station fire at Jim's Havecock Service Station 193 Winton Avenue Hayward. The blaze caused about 20000 dollars in damage to the station and its contents.

Surcharge Extension Looms in House Vote

Washington report: House moves to extend the 10 percent income surtax for the rest of the year with House Democratic whip Hale Boggs predicting a wide margin of victory and the Senate already backing a six month extension. The measure aims to raise about 5.6 million dollars for the Treasury per business year starting July 1. Woman injured in flash fire at home on Khan Ave

A 54 year old San Leandro woman received emergency care and was sent home after a flash fire at her Khan Avenue residence. Fire officials said the blaze started when she opened a washing machine lid while soaking her husband’s clothes with lighter fluid. Flames swept the laundry and kitchen, scorching the interior. Three engines and 14 firefighters responded.
