Record Gains in Utilities Assessment in California
James H. Quinn of Oakland disclosed that public utility property statewide is valued at over 1.524 billion dollars for local tax purposes, yielding about 80 million dollars in current city county and district revenues. Alameda County shows state assessed tangible property at 100.792 million, up 9.232 million or 10.69 percent from 1948, while the state total rose 159.041 million or 11.7 percent. Gas and electric firms remain the major local revenue contributors, and for the first time the combined value of telephone and telegraph companies surpasses that of railroads. One exception is Surprise Valley Certification Corp in Modoc County, whose decline partly offsets gains elsewhere.
