Many will be late to church as clocks jump forward at 2 a.m. tomorrow. AC Transit plans a 2:07 a.m. advance to minimize disruption to late service. The missing hour will be regained the last Sunday in October when clocks move back one hour.
India charged Pakistan army with a brigade of at least 3000 men thrust about seven miles into Indian territory, repulsed with heavy losses. Pakistan used tanks for first time since 1948. Three Pakistani tanks were destroyed. Spokesman called the fighting unprecedented and near war in intensity, warning of possible wider actions along the long border.
A four year old, Ben Glaser, wandered along the railroad tracks from his Rutgers Street home carrying a toy machine gun. San Leandro police officer Randy Haviland brought him to the station to locate his family, sharing a cone en route before the mother connected with him and the boy returned home.
Severe winds and heavy rain battered eastern Iowa threatening a major dike system along the Mississippi. Sandbags and volunteers reinforced wasteland breaches while flooding forced temporary road closures and endangered towns including Sabula and New Boston. Civil defense kept watch as pump stations and levees struggled against rising waters.
In the Da Nang area four U.S. Marines were wounded slightly during a patrol 13 miles south of Da Nang Air Base. Meanwhile air forces pounded North Viet Nam targeting road convoys and a ferry site and a large Viet Cong attack on Kien Hoa Prov ine near Sai gon ended with 32 defenders killed or missing. The Navy plans AG Intruder jet attack bombers for further strikes.
U S officials said it might take up to 300 000 American troops to help South Viet Nam stem a full scale Chinese invasion but stressed no such prospect exists now and no decision to send more forces beyond about 34 000 already in country. They found no evidence of large scale Soviet or Red China intervention planned.
The United Steelworkers Union announced a first contract extension delaying the May 1 strike deadline for Phoenix Steel Corp. about 1,000 shielders at Phoenixville Pennsylvania and 2,000 workers at Claymont Delaware. The agreement will be formally signed Monday.
A 14 year old San Lorenzo boy was killed when struck by a train on the Southern Pacific railroad trestle near the Westinghouse plant on Grant Avenue. The boy, John W. Witten Jr., was riding a mini bike and crossed the trestle. His companion, 13 year old John Wilkenson, reportedly exited the path before the crossing. The engineer saw them at a distance but could not stop in time. Witten was the son of Lt. (jg) and Mrs. John W. Witten Sr.
Washington AP reports that acting under the revenue code, President Johnson retroactively exempts non commissioned officers and other U S forces serving in the Viet Nam area from federal income tax. The exemption, once limited, now covers combat zone service and extends to hospitalizations, with payments and exemptions explained.
A Los Angeles AP report details University of California leaders reviewing proposed standards on student conduct, speech, and fundraising amid Berkeley controversy. Regents heard a telegram outlining demands to cancel penalties for disciplined students and to set policies on free expression, off campus speakers, and campus discipline.
