Weather Corner reports mixed readings across regions

Meanly cloudy today with a 34 percent chance of showers in parts. San Francisco Bay Area expects 60 percent showers this afternoon with highs around 57 and gale warnings for west to northwest winds up to 30 to 50 mph. Nevada, Shasta-Siskiyou and valley areas show rain or snow, windy conditions, and highs in the 40s to 60s with varying tonight lows. Southern Alameda County notes ongoing wind advisories and temperatures in the 40s to 60s through the period.

Heavy Rain In Eastern Regions Barrages Midwest to Gulf States

Sections of Illinois Indiana and Ohio reported strong winds up to 52 mph and heavy rain across the eastern half of the nation. Flood warnings issued as rivers rose fast from Idaho to Ohio and Nevada. U S Moves To Reduce Desk Space

Washington reports that federal offices are trimming desk space to cut costs. Bernard Boutin of the GSA told a Senate committee the average per employee space saved could yield about 1.5 million dollars annually in rental, maintenance, and operating costs. He cited a reduction from 150.3 to 140.8 square feet per worker, saving 5 million dollars last year.

Attack on Hebrew Pupils Sparks Brooklyn Police Probe

New York AP reports about 50 youths attacked Hebrew school pupils in Brooklyn on Tuesday. A 15 year old was accosted after two rabbis and other teachers stepped in. several students aged 9 to 12 fought back with fists as the group, described as Negro youths, ranged from sticks to a switchblade. Police said at least 48 pupils were injured, and the incident ended when reinforcements arrived and a man identified as a 15 year old was briefly detained.
