Infants critically hurt in San Lorenzo village crash
A San Lorenzo Village mother and her two infants were critically injured when a car driven by her husband, Navy lieutenant commander Elwood C. McCoy, struck a parked Key System bus on Epst Month Street near 154th Avenue. Mrs Edna Marie McCoy, 26, died from a fractured skull and ruptured liver at Fairmont hospital. Infant Sondra, eight months, sustained skull injuries and was not expected to survive. The two-year-old boy John McCoy received emergency treatment, then transfers to Highland and Oak Knoll hospitals. The father suffered fractured ribs and other injuries. A bystander, Bessie Mac Mathis, 35, Oakland, had minor injuries. Police eyewitness TR Walker reported witnessing the crash’s immediate impact.

The Bay District Council of Carpenters to call a four county strike after May 1 when current contract expires affecting more than 14,000 carpenters in Alameda San Francisco San Mateo and Marin counties. Negotiations continue with nine contractor associations as arbitration and wage terms remain disputed. Iscal Williams says only one two hour meeting remains before the deadline and no substitute clause has been offered. Thirteen bargaining points include wage increases overtime rules, disability insurance, and preserving labor protections while eliminating contested sections.

C.V. Theater Opens Next Wednesday in Castro Valley
The Chabot Theater in Castro Valley is set to debut Wednesday April 24 with a double feature The Navadan and Mother Didn’t Tell Me. Co owners Norman Goodin and Charles Smith unveil weekly film changes and weekday shows at 6 a.m. opening. The concrete and steel venue seats 800 and features air conditioning sound, a chrome yellow lobby, and a candy and ice cream bar. Goodin, based in Orange, operates two theaters. Smith will manage the Chabot theater, his first theater venture.

Garage Blast Ravages Hayward Shop Near City Hall
A gasoline explosion in a 50 by 40 foot frame garage on 877 D Street across from City Hall Plaza gutted the building early today. Owner T A Schleci, 23, of Castro Valley and a customer Edward Seward, 728 Vineyard Road, were inside when a car slipped from jacks, punctured the gas tank, and a spark ignited the fuel. The blast blew off large front doors and Schleci was hurled through them but escaped serious injury. Two cars and equipment were lost, damages about 20000. Fire Chief Louis Silver and Hayward Fire Department contained the fire within an hour, preventing spread to nearby businesses.
