Wayne Ferguson, 48, superintendent of Palmdale schools, outlines hardline views in his bid for Fremont Unified School District superintendent. A year-old deaf man in Salt Lake City heard his first sounds when a computer activated six tiny electrodes implanted in his inner ear. Utah researchers, in collaboration with Los Angeles, drilled and connected a cochlear implant system to a computer that transmitted signals through a skin button, enabling the patient to perceive sound for the first time. The team aims to develop computer assisted hearing in three to five years to help tens of thousands with cochlear damage, potentially enabling telephone conversations.

A county study committee recommends merging Ashland Cherryland and San Lorenzo fire departments into a single district. The plan, supported by Leo Fancey and Capt Eugene Walker despite dissent from Les Silveira and Ric Burns, would place voters under a three way district with an appointed board and a maximum tax rate of 1 per 100 of assessed valuation. The full committee will meet May 7 to finalize the report to the Local Agency Formation Commission.
