Oak Creek operators barred from practice in Alameda case
Alameda County Superior Court issued a permanent injunction against former Oak Ranch operators Leo and Barbary Guidotti and relatives, barring them from owning or operating any facility for mentally retarded or emotionally disturbed youths. The judge censured the ranch, awarded $57,500 in damages, and closed the Cast Valley facility and two satellites in mid February after findings of mistreatment, corporal punishment, and confinement in an outdoor cage.

Subway Stress Tied to Early Death in Hypertensive Rats
Brooklyn researchers report that rats exposed to simulated subway riding died younger than controls. Four of 12 exposed rats died within 16 months, while none died in the non ride group, suggesting subway stress may cause premature death in hypertensive rats. Researchers presented at the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology meeting.

New test doubles accuracy in early lung cancer detection
Dr Myron R Melamed reports that a Memorial Sloan Kettering study of 6600 men over 45 who smoke 1 pack daily found 61 early or suspected cancers. None showed symptoms before testing. The test proved seven per thousand versus a predicted three per thousand. Most cancers found were operable.
