United States officials say Soviet fighters used dangerous harassing tactics against a C130 freighter flying at 25 000 feet from Berlin. Britain urged halting high level flights to Berlin ahead of an East West ministers conference amid protests over safety violations.
Ten inside workers at Pacific Telephone in Redwood City were suspended for taking an unauthorized coffee break in a group last night. The company noted prior warnings and will hold a meeting today to clarify policy for inside versus outside employees amid rumors of wider trouble.
Four Cuban men hijack a Cuban airliner near Havana at gunpoint after the flight leaves the airport. Passengers include Peter Kissel and wife Phyllis Far Hills New Jersey Sally Rowley of New York Rudy Appel of New York and Havana lawyer Dr Domingo Acosta. The hijackers threaten to kill if passengers move and force pilots from the cockpit. None of the passengers were harmed during the incident which occurred about 50 miles south of the Cuban mainland near Sea of Pines.
President Eisenhower formally accepted John Foster Dulles resignation as secretary of state. He said a new secretary would be named within a few days and Dulles will serve as consultant on foreign affairs while ill at Walter Reed. Dulles wrote that he could not be well enough to continue.
Eden Hospital announces payroll reductions in the dietary department, trimming staff from 63 to 50 as new systems are installed. Administrator Elmer C. Massmann notes the overstaffing was the issue and stresses patient services will not be curbed.
President Gamal Abdel Nasser declares in a World Telegram interview that the Soviet Union seeks to overthrow him, establish a Communist government in Egypt, and spread influence across Africa. The statements came through Nasser's written responses to questions from Henry N. Taylor.

In Hayward a 15 year old boy, Jerry Michael MacFarland, was found hanged in the family garage after an early morning car crash that injured his older brother.
