Cemetery Vandal Jailed In Germany

German police jailed a 21 year old laborer for damaging 25 tombstones in a Jewish cemetery in Luebeck. Many stones marked graves of concentration camp victims. Jewish groups say the act was anti-Semitic. The suspect Hans Heinrich Hertz said he held a grudge against the cemetery keeper.

In San Francisco's McLaren Park, 40 year old Edward B Rising hanged himself with clothesline. Police say family quarrel over drinking preceded the tragedy and that Rising threatened death, fleeing to the basement garage before officers found him suspended from a tree.

Lennard Ewing Scott of Los Angeles, 60, fled into Canada after his wife vanished. He carried a suitcase with vitamins and ulcer pills as he was hustled back to the United States through the Detroit Windsor tunnel. He admitted his identity after FBI fingerprints matched earlier California prints.

Penalties Cut For Turncoats

Washington Army halved the court martial sentences of two Korean War era turncoats, Edward Dickenson of Crackers Neck Virginia and Claude Batchelor of Kermit Texas. Dickenson’s sentence dropped from 10 to 5 years, Batchelor’s from 20 to 10, with releases possible in 1961 and January 1960 respectively. Both are at Fort Leavenworth. The reductions followed an annual clemency review led by Assistant Army Secretary Hugh H. Milton, with defense secretary Charles E. Wilson directing special consideration for ex POWs.

San Francisco presses for swift action on billboards ban

City officials renewed efforts to remove about 2000 billboards still visible in residential areas after a five year campaign. Building Inspection head Lester Bush cited November 1955 survey showing 219 large and 45 small billboards in violation. a $3500 fine exists for illegal installations. City attorney Dion Helm said no prosecutions planned, while voluntary compliance has improved. Advertising spokesmen note many sites originally listed in violation in spring 1952 have been removed, with no current removal drive underway.

Passing Try Ends In Death Of 3

A risky passing attempt on a narrow road led to a head on crash near Lancaster Calif killing 18 year old Martin E Rini and two Air Force men 20 year old Furman 2/e Jerry F Mahan and 36 year old T Sgt John Sutyak all from Edwards Air Force Base Authorities say the collision occurred during an attempted pass on the oncoming lane and the three men died at the scene
