Fairfield jurors convict James Reece, 32, of first degree murder, first degree robbery, kidnapping for robbery, and rape in the slaying of Debra Ann Rebiejo, 21, abducted from Chabot College in Hayward. Body found Sept. 16 near Vacaville after her disappearance Sept. 15 from campus.
In Hayward voters replaced one incumbent and re elected two, with Lawrene Rate leading a 21 candidate field. Ratto captured 3,777 votes, beating J Kenneth Birchfield by five as new faces Randall and Bras joined the council. turnout was 31 percent of 28,678 registered voters.
Rich Soares a San Leandro High School coach and L N Landis a Pacific Telephone executive won district council seats in a city election. Lois McDonald narrowly defeated incumbent J G Sanders for a school board post, while Max Wilde won an unopposed school trustee seat. Voter turnout was about one third. A charter amendment allows incoming council members to appoint to boards on June 30.
Patricia Hearst remained in pain but stable after emergency surgery for a collapsed lung. A chest tube was placed by Dr. Jeffrey Weisberg to reinflate the lung while guards watched the ER. Berkeley reports say the Harrises faced charges for kidnapping Hearst and she prepared to testify.
Alameda County supervisors unanimously voted to keep two San Leandro courts for now. The plan moves the city hall court to the Hayward Hall of Justice in about a year and considers consolidating the remaining San Leandro courts in Hayward later.
