BART May Sue Firms Over Delays In Opening System

BART directors show willingness to pursue claims against contractors over delays that pushed revenue service beyond initial expectations. A six to one vote rejected a settlement with Stewart-Warner granting a six month extension to advertising rights, amid concerns the contract period could become a windfall for the firm. Directors argued delays were not BART’s fault and urged protecting the transit agency from bearing all costs.

Widow sues city over Hayward mid air crash

Cheryl A. Mattschel and her 1-year-old daughter Michele file a $1 million damage claim against the city of Union City alleging negligence at Hayward Airport. The suit cites poor air wall controls and inadequate facilities and warnings surrounding the Jan 4 collision between a Cessna 180 and a Piper 140, which killed Mattschel eight days after the crash. No city or FAA official is named.

Temple doctor foresees cloning and eugenics shaping 2000

Dr George Ehrlich of Temple University warned at the American Academy meeting that by 2000 cloning could produce perfect or servant classes, and eugenics might allow genetic screening to abort defects or select sex. He said aging could be halted with future spare parts, and village doctors may be replaced by telephones and computers for diagnoses.

Navy NASA planes collide near Sunnyvale golf course

A Navy patrol plane and NASA’s Sungate 990 Flying Laboratory collided while attempting to land near a Sunnyvale golf course. Six aboard the patrol craft and the NASA craft were involved. one aboard the Navy plane died. An unidentified student pilot may have flown the Navy aircraft. investigators say human error, not mechanical failure, caused the crash. The NASA plane was returning from a checkout and migration study mission when the accident occurred.
