Strike threat looms in public employee bargaining clash
Local 444 of the State County and Municipal Employes Union threatens action against East Bay Municipal Utility District over interpretation of the Meyers Milias Brown Act. About one third of EBMUD's roughly 1,000 workers are in the union. A strike was authorized two months ago by the union and Alameda County Central Labor Council to win recognition as exclusive bargaining agent and a contract covering wages hours and working conditions. EB MUD says the union canceled a meeting scheduled last Friday and accuses the union of failing to meet and confer in good faith under the new law.
