Mt Asama erupted about 75 miles north west of Tokyo sending smoke and ashes up to 22,900 feet for eight minutes. Ashes drifted over Tokyo for about 40 minutes, causing fires but no injuries. Pebbles as large as beans fell on nearby towns, while the eruption near Karuizawa involved royal figures in the region.
At Vandenberg Air Force Base California scientists race to recover the 195 pound Discoverer II instrument capsule from a polar orbit. The mission follows a failed Vanguard launch from Cape Canaveral as teams monitor whether the 1600 pound satellite began flight in position for ejection over the Pacific.

Dr. Overton M. Saul an 88 year old San Francisco man died by self inflicted action at his home sliding down a banister. Police reported he used a clothesline to secure himself and slid from an upper post between Sunday afternoon and Monday evening. The body was found astride the banister by a nephew.
