Los Angeles report says Joe Valdez, a 50 year old handyman missing since January 18 1932, was seen shuffling along Skid Row at 1 am when a patrol car stopped him. Officers Beck and Reichling detained Valdez at headquarters after a furtive glance led to suspicion.
SACRAMENTO AF A plan to give Los Angeles more seats in the State Senate has been laid away, but Assembly Speaker Jesse Unruh says it will become an election issue. Unruh notes the plan, which passed the Assembly by one vote, would expand the Senate from 40 to 48 members in 1961 and add seats for Los Angeles and several other counties. The Governmental Efficiency Committee ordered a study of the plan and related proposals, while Senator Virgil O’Sullivan proposes splitting Los Angeles into three counties.

San Francisco dispatch reports Marine sergeant West, 32, was moved from Treasure Island to a naval base for a new trial in Okinawa. Convicted of robbery, larceny, and absence without leave, his pretrial confinement was ruled null by the U.S. Court of Military Appeals. West’s attorney said a second trial could begin within two weeks.
Two freight derailments disrupted West Coast rail service on Wednesday. In Oregon about 75 miles south of Angene, 20 to 22 cars derailed a midline freight train, delaying clearance. In California, a pile of ore cars derailed near Maxwell and Williams, nine miles north of Maxwell, with investigators citing a lone cause as weather and track wear.
