Maryland mass escape leaves 16 inmates at large

Sixteen inmates remain at large after a nationwide manhunt in Maryland, with 21 recaptured. More than 400 troopers, guardsmen and MP units scoured a 20 mile radius near Patuxent Institution after 37 escaped from two facilities, including 34 at Patuxent, who overpowered guards and fled with keys. Two inmates from Catonsville were later recaptured.

Gun Duel Kills Robbery Suspects and Cop in Los Angeles

Two suspected robbers and a police officer died after a 15 minute gun battle at a market led by a large Los Angeles police deployment. Officer Charles Bogardus, entering to investigate, was shot in the head and died at hospital. Suspects Howard Grant and Nathaniel Banks were killed inside the store as others tried to flee. two clerks escaped with minor injuries.

Complaint Filed In Dog Shooting

A misdemeanor complaint charging malicious maiming and injuring an animal was signed by dog owner Howard W. Hammett after his dog Sam a black German Shepherd was shot by Howard Butterfield at 29962 Mission Blvd. The dog’s injuries required removal of about 20 pellets by a veterinarian as Hammett’s niece Linda Shirley and her friend Patricia Carlini witnessed the event while selling Gil Scout books. Butterfield said prior trouble with a dog resembling Sam had killed his chickens.

Forty seven cars compete in the 23rd Mobilgas Economy Run second day starting in Cedar City Utah after all entrants completed the first leg from Los Angeles to Kansas City. The 462 mile initial run was completed on schedule by the field.

Jury Trial Asked In Battery Case In Oakland

In Oakland a woman asked for a jury trial after a battery incident at a Hayward apartment complex. Wilma Staten, 29, and Reynold Staten, with another couple, went for a 230 am swim. dog barking triggered the dispute with apartment manager Nellie Hammer, 45, who says she was nearly thrown into the pool by Mrs Staten in a sun suit. The trial date was set for April 15 for Wilma Staten.

The Supreme Court today rejected another appeal by Daryl Chessman, who has escaped death in California's gas chambers for about a decade through numerous appeals. The decision was a brief order. Chief Justice Earl Warren did not participate.

Treasure found in old jacket in Yonkers New York

Salvation Army worker found $4526 hidden in a tattered jacket donated for the needy. Detectives traced the jacket to James Ross, who said it belonged to his brother-in-law James Cashin, a former police captain, and Ross had given the jacket to the Salvation Army after Cashin's death last February. The money was turned over to Cashin's estate.

Fremont Girl Drowns in River Near Stockton

Suzanne Marie Carroll age 4, daughter of Mr and Mrs Alfred Carroll, drowned yesterday while playing by the San Joaquin River south of Stockton. The father, finishing a nearby bridge, could not reach her in time as water remained swift for hours before her body was recovered. Suzanne was a fourth grader at Irvington Elementary School enrolled February 1st.

Bold Reply Made To Soviet Charge

Washington charged Russia with jeopardizing next month Geneva talks by trying to restrict U S air traffic in West Berlin. State Department spokesman Lincoln White said a Soviet fighter action in the allied corridor March 27 was a unilateral move repudiating Soviet responsibilities in Berlin and Germany. He noted previous Soviet notes and U S flights at higher altitudes into Berlin. The United States has not agreed to any altitude restriction for Allied flights in the corridor.

Gas Tax Issue Sets County Supervisor Agenda

The Board will consider reappropriating 105,317 in county gas tax funds unclaimed by San Leandro. County Surveyor Clot Anderson notes high priority road projects await allocation since San Leandro has not agreed to share sales tax revenue.
