Labor Secretary W. J. Usery announces a tentative settlement ending a three day nationwide Teamsters strike that caused highway violence and factory layoffs. The pact must be ratified by about 400,000 Teamsters, including 160,000 still active, and supersedes earlier agreements drawn Friday and earlier.
Former mayor George Christopher acting as neutral observer resumes negotiations to end a four day strike by civil service craft workers. He meets separately with each side before joint talks begin at a hotel near city hall acting as public representative at the unions’ request.
In San Jose at the California Republican Assembly endorsing convention, Reagan campaign spokesman calls Ford erratic while Ford campaign manager accuses Reagan of negativity. Rogers Morton Ford campaign officials and Congressman Philip Crane clash over conservative labeling in back to back news conferences.
A fast spreading blaze believed started by a firebomb sweeps an old boom era Miami hotel killing seven elderly residents and forcing others to leap from windows. Fourteen others are injured, thirteen seriously, with hospital officials citing smoke inhalation and broken limbs as among the injuries.
