Tornadoes Kill, Injure Dozens Across Mississippi

Three tornadoes struck Mississippi early today causing one death and at least 42 injuries. A tornado near Sylvarena killed Louise Jones, 65, and injured her husband and two others. Another twister damaged a tuberculosis sanatorium near Jackson injuring 35 patients. A third tornado hit Glenn, injuring four and injuring 15 plantation workers.

Jailed Blonde Claims Joke Behind Store Burglary

In San Francisco a 14 year old blonde, Marguerite Pace, was arrested on burglary charges after surrendering $4 to officers. She said it was a joke and that she had gone to GETS Inc Jest Night to see a friend, slept in an office, and alarmed the store twice. She admitted opening the safe, hiding $4 in her bra, and was later taken toward Los Angeles after a county custody bid.

Building Work Dispute Settled In Hayward Area

A dispute halting two Hayward area home builds found amicable settlement after a meeting in which council representatives rights were defined. Lamar Childers of Alameda County Building Trades Council said work stoppage occurred after a council rep was run off at Tamerack Knolls and Rancho San Lorenzo. Police search continues for Betty Jane Cummings, 30, who disappeared Friday with her two daughters Cindy Ann, 7, and Sandra, 18 months, while her husband Robert J. Cummings, 33, reports she left saying she would be right back. He notes she possibly carried a $200 sum and possesses a German pistol. her location remains unknown. The family has four children, and the couple has been married 12 years.

Box Firm Buys Hayward Site for Plant Move

An Oakland box company, Western Paper Box Co., bought 20 acres at Clawster and San Mateo Bridge Roads in Hayward to relocate two Oakland operations with 150 workers by 1958. Production of 30 workers starts in late 1957, followed by a 75-worker unit next year and 25 office staff, with a 200,000 square foot facility planned later this year.
