A mile long parade through Ashland’s business district launched Eden Community recreation center’s opening weekend. Thousands attended as entries from Hayward Castro Valley San Leandro San Francisco and Oakland joined in a festive procession along East 4th Street Kent Avenue Elgin to Bigth Street. Color guard and Marine band performed as Miss Mary Lassalle accepted keys to a hope chest. Prizes honored parade participants including Ki Bryan and Poley’s accordion band, with special awards for horse riders and mounted units.

Reg Bowman, a Hayward pharmacist, was named president of the Hayward Rotary Club after a board meeting. Jen Angus will serve as treasurer for 1991-92, and Dark Ekoos was re elected secretary. Youth Dies In Car Crash On U S 50 Near Livermore
An assembled car carrying Harvig Chalmers and Austin D. Davis, both of Walnut Creek, crashed on Highway 50 near Livermore Pass at 11 am. Chalmers died at St Paul’s hospital, Livermore, while Davis survived with extensive injuries. Witnesses saw the rebuilt pickup overturn and disintegrate, spilling two passengers onto the pavement. Davis in good condition today. Nearby incidents include Patrolman Eugene T. Davidson injured in a separate crash near Livermore Pass and two other injuries on Altamont Pass and Niles Highway with minor to serious injuries and hospitalizations.
