The second phase of the Armstrong County attack on polio begins Sunday Sept 15 with Type II Sabin oral vaccine doses under the direction of the Armstrong County Medical Society Polio committee.
City officials aim to insure program success with 52,000 recipients of Type I vaccine on June 2. Each person is expected to report to local clinics to continue the immunization effort as the same clinics will be used for follow up services.

A $1 million general alarm fire destroyed Hackney's Restaurant in the inlet section of Atlantic City. The 60-year-old three story frame building burned to the ground as most of the city's fire crews fought the blaze early today.
In Hamlikon Switzerland 43 of 200 residents died when a plane crashed outside Zurich. 26 children under 16 were orphaned and 14 older children lost at least one parent. The mayor and village officials perished, and families mourn as neighbors console one another. Meanwhile a separate fire damaged a Melrose area restaurant after a kitchen grease fire. Firefighters contained the blaze and prevented spread to adjacent homes.
Birmingham Board of Education agreed to close West End Ramsay and Graymont High and elementary schools after hours of rioting by about 1000 African Americans. Gov. Wallace stood down on blocking integration and ordered state troopers deployed earlier. One man died and several injured as police and rioters clashed. Arthur Shores’ home was bombed prompting a fresh wave of unrest.
Government station data show temperatures from 72 to 75 degrees and river stage at 10.6 feet with no change for both upper and lower pools. Precipitation recorded as 0.05 inches. In national figures, Greenville Maine logged 29 degrees and Red Bluff California reached 105 degrees.

A doe ran into the path of a southbound car at 6 25 am two miles north of Kittanning on Kit tanning Mosgrove Road. Driver Carl Norman Reefer 47 of Templeton RD 1 reported the collision. Police estimated 125 damage to the vehicle and a game protector oversaw deer removal.
Sligo town council met at the Fire Hall with La vert Bracken steering to pay off the remaining note at First Seneca Bank from the water fund. A street light request was read, action delayed for a street committee report, and lights planned for the William Simpson property and the Sligo playground. A special Sligo Water Authority meeting at 8 tonight will open bids for a water project financed by a state grant of 94000.
