The U S embassy in Saigon refused to surrender Buddhist opposition leader Thich Tri Quang, deepening U S Diem tensions as Quang seeks asylum in the embassy. Buddhists, about 70 percent of the population, hail him as a hero while U S officials call coup plots rumors.
President Kennedy spoke after a five day Hyannis Port vacation and urged Ngo Dinh Diem to stop Buddhist persecutions. He warned continued repression could jeopardize the U S backed fight against Communism and said military aid would continue though victory requires popular support. He also suggested civil rights proposals could affect his 1964 election outlook and cited uncertain early indicators.
In Tuskegee Alabama more than 200 state troopers blocked voting by students and teachers at Tuskegee High School to enforce segregation. Governor George Wallace claimed a victory while local officials vow federal action to restore local rule.
A fire at Randall Park race track in Cleveland killed two horses, Four Circles and Cable Lead, both claimed from racing events, while Glance Again and Billie Mangell were burned. Two others were injured as firefighters from three communities plus North Randall teams prevented spread to a nearby barn housing 65 horses.
A total of 88 students enrolled today for classes starting 8 a.m. Monday Sept 9 at the Armstrong County Center of Indiana State College. 70 are entering freshmen and 18 part time. Students met with advisers, planned their first semester programs, paid fees, bought tickets and obtained IDs. Textbooks from the main campus were available. Courses offered include Communications, Art, World Geography, Mathematics, Physical Science, Health, Typewriting, and Intro to Business.
Everett, Pa. UPI report: a big derrick toppled during a fire at a New York State Natural Gas Co. well near Everett, 16 miles south. Workers planned to dynamite the blaze after removing the rig with bulldozers. a minor burn injured Lester Crawford.
United Press International reports a grim Labor Day toll as road carnage climbs past prior records. Officials fear final deaths may exceed the 556 noted on the Independence Day weekend, with a projection near 575 after the 78 hour period.
A Kittanning woman suffered possible chest and back injuries in a two car collision at N McKean Street and Union Avenue at 7:30 am. Mrs Genevieve M Hough of 1423 Orr Ave was treated and released from Armstrong County Memorial Hospital. Harmen W King of Kittanning Road was involved.
Herbert McAnulty, 47, of Homer City, was injured when a gun he fired exploded at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital area after a collision between two cars at an intersection. Police estimated about 49 dollars damage to the Hough car and 20 dollars to the King car. The incident followed a high delay and related road trouble. The report lists traffic and casualty statistics across states, noting California leads with 60 traffic deaths and other tallies for Texas New York North Carolina Michigan Illinois and Indiana.

Charlayne Hunter, the first Negro to gain admission to the University of Georgia, reportedly married Walter Stovall, a white Southern student, last spring. The couple, living in Greenwich Village, are expecting a December baby. Hunter moved to New York after graduation and joined The New Yorker as an editorial assistant. Stovall previously worked for the Atlanta Journal.
