A Braniff DC7 en route to Rio de Janeiro plunged into mucklands near Miami and exploded killing nine of the 24 aboard while 15 survived. The fire swept from the right engine as the four engine airliner fell after takeoff, destroying the fuselage and wing but leaving some survivors unharmed in the slime. Survivors and victims were treated at local hospitals after being pulled from the wreckage and helicopters. The flight, delayed 24 hours, had planned stops in Panama Peru and Sao Paulo before reaching Rio.
