Weekend Toll Toll on Pennsylvania Highways Rises

Hydroplane race draws 5000 along Allegheny River

About 5,000 spectators watched Three Rivers Outboard Racing Association hydroplane heats on the Allegheny River in Kittanning. The event, first here since 1958, was sponsored by Kittanning Waterfront Redevelopment Corp. Donations fund riverfront improvements. Entrants hailed from at least three states and numerous towns. winners included Don Fenwich Newark Ohio, George Renner Monroe Mich, Gene Lambert Youngstown, and several others.

Attorney Noel Jr. Listed In Critical Condition At Shadyside

Local attorney Robert Noel Jr. of Kittanning MR 10 is described as critical at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was taken by ambulance to Armstrong County Memorial Hospital at 11 40 a m Sunday, treated, then transferred to Shadyside for further care after a prior Shadyside surgery.

West to Train Pilots in India amid Radar Exercises

New Delhi announced that U S and British aircraft will fly air defense exercises over India to train the Indian air force in modern radar and communications gear provided by the United States and Britain. Dates are not specified. The plan does not commit either side to defend India, nor India to request such aid. Separately, India will form six mountain divisions to defend against future Chinese incursions, trained like WWII Chindit units, with readiness in six months and divisions of 12 000 to 14 000 men.

Harrisburg UPI The General Assembly opens a five day session with debates over appropriations education and spending. House Democrats may revive a 55 million batch of non preferred appropriations while the Senate eyes tolling the 963 million general appropriations bill. Governor Scranton weighs changes proposing 63 million more for teachers salaries and 85 million for state education aid.
