Judge Graff Receives Distinguished Service Medal

Armstrong County Judge J Frank Graff was honored today with the Pennsylvania American Legion Distinguished Service Medal at the 45th annual convention in Pittsburgh. Four Die In Three Vehicle Route 19 Crash Near Pittsburgh

A late night three vehicle crash on Route 19 in Upper St Clair Township killed four people. Among the dead were Willard Gilliland 57 and his son Raymond 15 plus daughter Julia 12 from the Gilliland family of Peters Township and C I E Buente 71 of Mount Lebanon. Three others were injured including Beth Gilliland 10 and sisters Nancy 8 and Ellen 4. The wreck occurred at 8:45 p.m. near the Upper St Clair fire house as investigators sought causes amid conflicting accounts.

Rails Strike Possibility Increasing

Washington reports little hope for a voluntary settlement in the deadlocked rail work rules dispute as a presidential fact finding board sends a draft report to unions and management. Labor Secretary Wirtz will present the final report to President Kennedy Friday amid calls to avoid a crippling national strike. The president warned both sides but has no reports from Wirtz predicting a negotiated deal before Monday when the issue goes to Congress. No evident moves toward mediation from unions or management.

Commissioners Tour Bridges In Armstrong County

Armstrong County Commissioners Floy L Campbell and Kenneth J George oversaw an annual inspection and maintenance tour of 87 bridges. Over two weeks a four person crew of vacationing college students cleared brush, cleaned floors, and painted where needed. The workers will finish the week by repairing roofs on election houses.

Kennedy asks Congress to enact a temporary tax on foreign borrowing

President Kennedy urged Congress to pass an offsetting tax on foreign borrowing to shrink the payments deficit and replenish U.S. gold stocks. The plan pairs the new interest equalization tax with renewed emphasis on exports, tourism, and reduced overseas military and aid expenditures to halt the rising balance of payments gap through 1965.

Four in Crash Still in Hospital

A father and mother William and Marjorie Cupec remain in satisfactory condition at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital with two other children also hospitalized after a crash that killed a fifth child Linda Cupec. Diana 11 and Sharon 1 continue under care. William 10 and Carol 9 were discharged. A Requiem High Mass was held for Linda Cupec at an East Vandergrift church after a station wagon hit a utility pole in Manor Township.

McCue Seeks Recreation Aid in Armstrong County

Rep John B McCue petitioned Gov William W Scranton to develop Armstrong County as a natural recreation area instead of Butler County arguing Armstrong is undeveloped and could be aided with existing parks and roads. He noted no new state park in Armstrong in the 1963 65 capital budget while Butler parks are planned and cited the Allegheny River and Crooked Creek Flood Control Dam as notable features.
