Harrisburg report on the Pennsylvania House poised to repeal Act 561 the 1961 school district realignment law. An administration backed reform is to be amended next week while a parallel committee debates teacher pay raises from 3600 to 4500 yearly with a 58 million state subsidy boost and 14 million local matching.
House Democrats move to derail July 31 adjournment as Republicans push final action on $963 million general appropriation bill and a plan for a statewide constitutional convention. The debate centers on wind up timing and a proposed delegate selection method.
Armstrong County Citizens Band Radio Unit staged a simulated plane crash in the Cherry Run area. A total of one component participated in the disaster drill. Radiological meters were used to check for radiation within 30 minutes of alert. A demonstration and lecture on radiation followed.
Kittanning Firemen's Band won its 26th straight first prize and 102nd top award in 114 contests at Evans City Firemen's Parade scoring 93 from All-American Judges to beat Springdale. First prize was $75. Firemen quickly extinguished a truck battery fire near the parade end before continuing the march. No junior band prizes awarded as Evans City was the only high school band present. Other prizes went to Vern Acklin Tarentum senior drum corps and Meridian Woodpeckers junior drum corps.
Three men died Tuesday night in a two car crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near the Midway service area. Victims tentatively identified as James T. Thompson Hollis N Y Samuel Benson Los Angeles Calif and James C Raby York Pa. Police said a Volkswagen carrying Benson and Thompson crossed a median strip twice and struck Raby’s auto on the second crossing. Papers indicated the Volkswagen was traveling from Connecticut for delivery in Hollywood California.
UPI reports fourteen American soldiers in a U S special forces unit were wounded Tuesday night in a Communist mortar attack near Can Thao air field south of Saigon. Three were seriously injured. Two South Vietnamese soldiers also suffered wounds while relatives of the Americans were not yet notified.
Columbia Broadcasting System invites Nelson Rockefeller and Barry Goldwater to a one hour TV debate on July 24 August 7 or August 21. CBS News president Richard Salant says the exchange should focus on Republican Party policies and directions in 1964. Neither candidate has yet replied.
Moscow reports say Chinese and Soviet ideological teams resumed talks after a 24 hour pause amid Beijing instructions to answer Pravda’s attack on Chinese policy. Diplomats doubt progress, with no word on a possible final session and both sides airing sharp, bitter exchanges.
About 40 area residents were accepted at Armstrong County Center of Indiana State College with enrollment expected to reach 50 to 80 by September. Dr. Arthur F. Nicholson said interviews were held for another 50 students in Kittanning and Ford City, with plans for an August open interview. The center will operate two years of accredited coursework transferable to Indiana State College or other institutions, plus an 18 month business program not granting a degree. Entrance requires a diploma and strong test scores. full-time tuition runs about 400 dollars annually. Part-time costs depend on credits taken.
Weather and river data show Allegany River Lock No 7 readings at 12:30 p m. upper pool 11.7 feet, stable lower pool 10.7 feet, stable. Precipitation 0.42 inches. Separately, U S Weather Bureau reports lowest 44 degrees at Mullan Idaho and Havre Montana and highest 111 degrees at Blythe California.
Air Force Maj Bob Rushworth will shut off automatic controls on the X-15 to test stability at 112000 feet. The test precedes Joe Walter’s planned flight to push the plane toward a 315000 foot altitude record. The aim is to measure yawing motion when stability gear is disabled.
Earl Atherton 13 of Kittanning RD 5 sustained a deep cut on the left knee after a fall on rocks. He was treated yesterday at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital and released without detention.

Abandoned mines defined as six months of halted operations. law takes effect January 1 with board to form immediately.
The Dayton post of The American Legion earns recognition for membership excellence at Pennsylvania's state convention in Pittsburgh Convention Hall Hilton. With 217 members in the just completed year, post commander Wallace Copenhaver, who signed up 120 of 1963 members, plans to attend to accept the department award presented by Department Commander Louis J. Greco and the department membership chair.
Two members of the G William Cupec family left Armstrong County Memorial Hospital after a one car crash that killed Linda Cupec 12. William 10 and Carol 9 were discharged with William having a head cut and Carol a fractured right arm. The crash occurred when a station wagon driven by Cupec struck a telephone pole on Bailey Avenue and Route 66 in Manor Township while returning from Leechburg as Cupec apparently fell asleep at the wheel. Remaining hospitalized are Cupec 36 with head lacerations and chest contusions Mrs Cupec 31 with chest contusions and multiple lacerations Diana 11 with a compound left leg fracture and Sharon 1 with a fractured skull. All are listed in satisfactory condition. Mrs Cupec was taken to Brady Funeral Home Vandergrift to see Linda then returned to the hospital with a nurse. Requiem High Mass was sung for Linda at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church Vandergrift and she was buried at St Gertrude Cemetery Vandergrift. The Cupecs had lived in Vandergrift before moving to Kittanning ten years ago.
